With the world quickly changing, there are new innovative and interactive ways for us to retrive our information. It’s not all about newspapers anymore and we can easily now measure what stories are the most “newsworthy”. Here are some interesting new ways to see the news around the world:
10 X 10 - The Web site measures RSS feeds to determine a hundred words and pictures to describe the news at every hour. You can scroll over the image to get the corresponding word. Once you click on the word, you can see the a larger image, leading headlines and links to the new stories. When this blog was posted the top 5 words were: Microsoft, Yahoo, talks, rice and leader.
You can also look at past hours and days measurements. It’s a pretty interesting idea to be able to sum down all the news into 100 words and pictures. I wouldn’t think it would be possible but I suppose a picture is worth many words that can accompany the single one.
Newsmap- My past professor, Kelli Matthews, demonstrated the newsmap to us in class. The newsmap allows you to track news from different countries around the world through various sized and colored blocks or squares. I prefer the squarified version.
Each square has a headline and color designated by the type of news story such as entertainment, world news, national news, business, technology, sports and entertainment. The size of the square is determined by the number of corresponding articles available. Once you place your mouse over the square, it shows your the headline, the lead, a link to the article and the number of relevant articles.
You can also select to compare two countries news coverage such as US usually has more emphasis on entertainment than other countries.
